Feral pigeons can cause many problems in urban environments. Not only is the fouling of building aesthetically displeasing, it can also be destructive due to the acidity of pigeon’s excrement. As well as eroding building material, their droppings can block gutters and pipes and encourage an infestation of insects.
Pigeons carry many diseases such as salmonellosis and ornithsis, along with bird fleas and mites which can all cause problems for humans.
Bird droppings are also a problem. If guano is left to accumulate and dry, over time the germs contained within the droppings will become airborne. Inhaled, this can lead to respiratory infections, including pneumonia.
This may sound like scaremongering, but we cannot stress too strongly the possible consequences of a pest infestation, particularly in commercial environments involving food preparation and processing. The good news is that high standards of hygiene and effective pest control will ensure that pests cannot get access.
